Mob Attacks Doctor After Man Declared Dead On Arrival In Assam’s Dudhnoi

The crowd also smashed hospital properties and created a chaotic situation

Attacks against doctors in Assam are on the rise and not less than a month, two attack cases have been reported. On September 18th, 2019, a mob assaulted an on-duty doctor and vandalized the Dudhnoi government hospital located in Goalpara district.

The victim identified as Dr Apurbo Boro, was on duty when the incident occurred. As per reports, on September 18th, 2019, five people injured in an accident were brought to the hospital for treatment. Among the injured, one was identified as Bikash Rabha.

Boro, who was on duty at that time, after examining the injured, declared Bikash ‘brought dead’. On hearing this, the people who had brought the injured to the hospital attacked Boro. Dr Jayanta Sahu was also attacked by the mob.

The crowd also smashed hospital properties and created a chaotic situation. Seeing this, a nurse intimated the police who rushed to the spot and rescued Boro and the other staffers before the mob could do more damage.

When the incident came to light, the Assam Medical Service Commission condemned the incident and lodged an FIR in the Dudhnoi Police Station. The Dudhnoi hospital authorities have also lodged an FIR under Sec 294/323/353/427/506/34/IPC RW Section 3(2)PDPP Act1984. Meanwhile, the police have not made any arrest so far.

It may be mentioned, on August 31st, 2019 a 73-year-old retired doctor Deben Dutta was lynched by tea plantation workers after a youth died in the Teok Tea Estate. Following this incident, doctors engaged in several tea estates resigned from their posts citing insecurity. Also, the incident created a huge uproar and inquiries were initiated by the state government.
