Manipur’s Mirabai Chanu and Mizoram’s Jeremy Lalrinnunga have sealed their berths for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics which has been postponed to the summer of next year due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga took to the micro-blogging site Twitter to congratulate the weightlifters.
“Amidst all the chaos and gloomy feeds, here’s something to lighten and cheer up your moment.
Our pride, our lad @raltejeremy just keeps on climbing his mountains of success! Best wishes to you and Mirabhai Chanu,” Zoramthanga tweeted.
A total of eight weightlifters from each weight class will qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. Mirabai is currently ranked 8th, while Jeremy is placed 2nd in the International Weighlifting Federation ranking lists.
Yadav also mentioned that the Indian lifters will be taking part in more events after normalcy returns.
The 2020 Olympics set to be held in Tokyo, Japan this summer have been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Tokyo Olympics will begin on July 23rd, 2021.
Tokyo 2020 chief Yoshiro Mori told media that the Tokyo Olympics will now be held from July 23rd to August 8th, 2021. The Paralympics will be held from August 24th to September 5th, 2021.
