The doctor tested positive for novel coronavirus in Meghalaya died in the wee hours of Wednesday while six of his family members and helpers were found to be positive of COVID-19.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said, “I am deeply saddened to inform that the first COVID19 positive patient in Meghalaya passed away this morning at 2:45 am. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. May his soul rest in peace.”
He further added that several other samples linked to the doctor were tested and of the 68 tested so far, six have come out positive. The ones tested positive are family members and helpers of the doctor. Apart from this, 6 other cases are being retested while all other tested are found negative.
The doctor took his last breath at Bethany Hospital in Shillong where he used to work. The hospital was sealed off and converted into a quarantine centre for the staff and the persons in there on Monday.
As of now, Meghalaya has imposed a strict lockdown and attempts to trace all the positive cases are still on.
