The Manipur Legislative Assembly on August 26th, 2019 passed a resolution to rename Tulihal International Airport (popularly known as Imphal Airport) as ‘Bir Tikendrajit International Airport’. The motion was moved by Chief Minister N Biren Singh, who is also the leader of the House. The move was it was supported by the opposition led by Ibobi Singh.
The Imphal Airport which is located in the state’s capital is the largest and second busiest airport in the Northeast after the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati. More than 10 flights operate from the Aiprort daily.
The Airport connects with the country’s major cities such as Bengaluru, Delhi, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Pune, Hyderabad and many more.
It may be mentioned, Bir Tikendrajit was a prince of the independent Kingdom of Manipur in present-day northeastern India. He was the commander of the Manipuri army and engineered a palace revolution that led to the events known as the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891 or the ‘Manipur Expedition’.
