    Lower Subansiri Project: NHPC To Resume Construction, Inks Pact With Assam Govt

    The construction of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project remained close since 2011 due to agitations staged by various pressure groups

    The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) Limited is all set to resume the construction of the 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project. In this regard, the NHPC on August 23rd, 2019, signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Assam government for implementation of the project. Niraj Verma, Principal Secretary (Power) signed the MOA on behalf of Government of Assam and Balraj Joshi, CMD, NHPC signed the MOA on behalf of NHPC. 

    The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project is the largest Hydro -Project of the country, presently under construction with an installed capacity of 2000 MW and annual generation of 7421.59 MU and is located on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. “NHPC has undertaken protection works along both the banks of Subansiri river in the downstream area for containing flood water and checking soil erosion,” a press communiqué stated.

    NHPC is also implementing downstream developmental works which inter alia includes livelihood intervention and infrastructural developmental works. Construction of the Project will bring an overall development in the area and give a fillip to the overall economy.

    It is pertinent to mention that several rounds of massive protests were staged against the construction of the project. The construction works of the project remained close since 2011.

    The NHPC is now set to resume the construction work of the project after the rainy season is over. The communiqué also stated that the NHPC is fully committed to complete the project with the support of local people.
