The first Global Cinema Festival 2020 was inaugurated by Chief Minister PS Tamang on February 28th, 2020 in Gangtok.
The festival is an initiative of the Film Federation of India in collaboration with Sikkim Film Co-operative Society Limited and Government of Sikkim to create an atmosphere of international film festivals in the State and to promote Sikkim as film locations and shooting destinations. It is also to be informed that Sikkim is the first Northeast State to host a film festival of such grandeur.
The first of its kind, the Global Cinema Festival Sikkim, 2020, will showcase 40 films: regional, national and international in two auditoriums with workshops on screenwriting and marketing of films.
“The festival brings an opportunity for Sikkim to network with the global film culture and is a chance to promote film tourism, introduce film-makers to new and fresh shooting locations, as well as to encourage assimilation, film appreciation and critical thinking,” Golay said.
The Chief Minister mentioned that the festival is also an immense platform for young film-makers to showcase their work to production houses, writers, journalists and film-enthusiasts. “The perfect opportunity to exhibit a body of work. The festival will provide young film-makers with a chance to promote their work without the hassles of a distribution channel. Other than all that, the festival will later provide opportunities for skill-building in the future,” he added.
The organiser said the festival brings an opportunity for Sikkim to network with the global film culture and is a chance to promote film tourism, introduce film-makers to new and fresh shooting locations, as well as to encourage assimilation, film appreciation and critical thinking.
Golay alongside members of the film industries from across the country declared the film festival open in Sikkim. Those present include Firdaus Hasan, President, Film Federation of India, Bollywood actresses Manisha Koirala, Padmini Kolhapuri and a host of stakeholders from the cinema.
