Assam firebrand leader and the Krishak Mukti Sangrama Samiti chief Akhil Gogoi, who was granted bail by a special National Investigation Agency court in Guwahati on March 17th, 2020, was re-arrested in connection with a case, registered with the Sivasagar Sadar police.
The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Sivasagar, sent him to four-day police custody in connection with a case (No 1344/2019) under sections 120B, 143, 150, 153, 153A, 157, 158, 183, 188, 191 and 431 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) registered with the district Sadar police.
The NIA court in Guwahati had accepted the bail plea of Gogoi earlier today against an amount of Rs 30,000.
Gogoi, a peasant leader and RTI activist, was arrested by the NIA for his role in inciting hatred and causing disaffection towards the government during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests in Assam in December last year. The NIA had levelled charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
He was placed under preventive arrest on December 12th, 2019, for protesting against the amendments to the Citizenship Act. He had staged a sit-in protest outside the Jorhat deputy commissioner’s office, following which he was arrested.
