    Justice SA Bobde To Be Next Chief Justice Of India, President Signs Warrant

    The swearing-in ceremony of the 47th CJI is likely to be held on November 18th, 2019

    The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind on October 29th, 2019 has signed the warrant appointing Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI). The swearing-in ceremony of the 47th CJI is likely to be held on November 18th, 2019. His term will run until April 23rd, 2021.

    Born on April 24th, 1956, Justice Bobde comes from a Nagpur-based lawyers’ family. His grandfather was a lawyer and his father Arvind Bobde was advocate-general of Maharashtra in 1980 and 1985.

    Justice Gogoi, who was sworn in as CJI on October 3rd, 2018, will retire on November 17th, 2019. On October 18th, 2019, CJI Justice Ranjan Gogoi has formally recommended Justice Bobde to be his successor.

     Justice Bobde became a Senior Advocate in 1998 and was appointed as an additional judge of Bombay High Court on March 29th, 2000. He joined as Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court in 2012 and was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court of India in 2013.

    He has been involved in top cases before the Supreme Court, including the Ayodhya temple-mosque dispute, Aadhaar, petitions against firecrackers and so on.
