Former Chief Minister and Congress leader Tarun Gogoi on January 6th, 2020 condemned the attack on the students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government at the Centre for creating the mayhem in the educational institutes.
Gogoi said that the “fascist attitude and dictatorial policy of the BJP government” is the reason behind the attack on the JNU students and teachers.
Violence broke out at JNU on January 5th, 2020 after masked men armed with sticks, iron rods and stones attacked students and teachers and vandalised property on the campus.
Over 20 people were injured and admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU)president Aishe Ghosh suffered a severe head injury. The JNU Students’ Union and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad blamed each other for the violence that continued for over two hours.
Earlier, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that the JNU violence was a “reflection of fear” that “fascists in control of our nation” have of the students. “The fascists in control of our nation, are afraid of the voices of our brave students. Today’s violence in JNU is a reflection of that fear,” the former Congress president tweeted.
On the other hand, the JNUSU blamed Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar for allowing the attack on students and teachers on the campus and also called for his resignation. The JNUSU has called Kumar a “mobster who perpetuates violence in the university”.
