Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind Backs Nation-Wide Implementation Of NRC

The complete final NRC list will be available online from September 14th, 2019

Largest Muslim body in India, Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind extended its support to the updation exercise of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam and said it should be implemented across the country to identify the infiltrators.

Mahmood Madani, general secretary of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, on September 12th, 2019 said that if the NRC is conducted across the country as it will help in knowing about the “intruders”. He also stated that the people of the Muslim community should consider the “correction” and the “inclusion” of their names in the list as their religious and national duties.

His statement came against the backdrop of the publication of the final list of NRC in Assam on August 31st, 2019. A total of 3,11,21,004 persons were found eligible for inclusion in the list while a total of 19,06,657 people were found ineligible including who did not submit claims. The complete final NRC list will be available online from September 14th, 2019.

The objective behind the updation of the NRC is aimed at segregating Indian citizens living in Assam from those who had illegally entered the state from the neighbouring country Bangladesh.

Several BJP leaders, All Assam Students’ Union and activists have publicly denounced the list and alleged that many genuine Indian citizens’ names were excluded from the list.
