The Bongaigaon Police has asked the public to be alert as an Irani gang is on the prowl in various parts of the state ahead of Durga Puja. Posing as jewellery polisher, the members of the gang are visiting the houses of the civilians.
In a similar instance, two men who were purportedly members of an Irani gang visited one Anita Sutradhar’s house at Barpara area of the district on September 14th, 2019 on the pretext of polishing old gold jewellery.
“They entered my house in my absence and asked my daughter to bring them any discoloured gold jewellery present in the house. They soaked my daughter’s gold chain in a red-coloured solution and asked my daughter to take it out after ten minutes and left our house. When my daughter tried to take out the chain from the solution, it was missing,” Sutradhar said.
The incident came to light after the lady created a hue and cry and a huge crowd assembled outside her house. Eventually, the police were also informed. The daylight theft incident has sparked sensation in the entire town.
“We have nabbed a few members of the gang in this connection. We have deployed our personnel in disguise to nab the culprits. The public should remain alert too. The police should be immediately informed if any doubtful person enters their house,” Subodh Sonowal, Superintendent of Police Bongaigaon told Time8.
