Guwahati: A bad neighbour is a misfortune, as much as a good one is a great blessing. Indeed.
An alert and a tech-savvy woman helped Guwahati police catch two burglars within hours of the crime at Pan Bazaar area. She not only recorded the incident of two thieves breaking into her neighbour’s flat on her mobile phone but also intimated others in the building to prevent the criminals from escaping.
At around 11 am, a woman caught sight of two men breaking into her neighbour, Sanjay Jain’s locked flat on the 5th floor of Asha Tower adjacent to her flat near Harisabha in the city’s Pan Bazaar area.
The lady immediately raised a hue and cry to gain the attention of other neighbours and started to record the incident on her mobile phone. A local eventually tipped off the Pan Bazaar Police and a plan was chalked out to nab the thieves.
The neighbours along with the cops joined hands and gheraoed the apartment from all directions to nab the thieves. After a thirty-minute chase, police managed to nab Suraj Rambilash Prajapati (20) of Gorakhpur, Nagender Sahini (25) of Dewaria in Uttar Pradesh in a typical filmy style.
The operation was led by Hemen Das, Officer-in-Charge of Pan Bazaar Police Station. Police recovered a few items including iron rod, pliers, and screwdrivers from the arrested duo’s possession.
Guwahati Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar lauded the woman for her alertness and presence of mind. “The lady has done a commendable job. If each and every Guwahatian acts with such alertness in their day to day life, we along with them would be able to wipe out such crimes from the society,” said Kumar.
