The Barpeta police have seized a massive haul of fake Rs 2000 and Rs 500 denomination banknotes worth Rs 1 lakh, 97500 from the district and arrested two persons for allegedly trying to circulate it in the local market.
According to the police two youths– Rakibul Hussain and Jonab Ali were attempting to exchange the counterfeit notes with genuine notes at Barpeta’s Garmuri bazaar area when they launched a search operation and nabbed the duo.
“Acting on reliable information we launch a search operation and arrested two persons. 74 pieces of Rs 2000 denomination and 99 pieces of Rs 500 denomination fake notes were seized from their possession,” said the police.
During preliminary interrogation the duo confirmed that they were using a stolen laptop and a bike which has been seized by the police. The said notes were hidden inside the seat of the bike.
A case has been registered with the police.
