Hojai SP Warns Public Against Fake News On Child Lifters; Man Arrested

Two Guwahati men were lynched by local villagers in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on suspicion of being child-lifters in 2018

Hojai Police has appealed to the public to refrain from believing and circulating random news contents without verifying facts. The appeal was made after a fake news on child-lifter in Hojai district went viral on social media.

Hojai Police also arrested one Samsul Haque Joynagar area by a team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Dipti Mali. Haque has been accused of posting a photo of a baby and claimed that the child-lifters entered its house and attempted to kidnap the child.

“Rumour mongering is an extremely dangerous act. Sometimes one doesn’t realise and forward a message without imagining that it might even cost someone’s life. We have the worst experiences in the past. It’s strange to see people using smartphones but are not smart enough,” said Ankur Jain, Hojai Superintendent of Police while speaking to Time8.

Meanwhile, Samsul has confessed to his crime during police interrogation.

“People should first verify before forwarding any post or message. People should responsively use social media and everyone should take due diligence before forwarding anything. If they come across any suspicious message, they should inform the police,” added Jain.

It may be recalled, two Guwahati men were lynched by local villagers in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on suspicion of being child-lifters in 2018. Sound engineer Nilotpal Das and businessman Abhijeet Das were on their way to a popular waterfall in Kangthilangso when they were stopped by the enraged locals in Panjuri Kachari village and mercilessly beaten to death.
