As many as 630 cases were booked and Rs. 1.72 Lakh realized as fine during Durga Puja in Guwahati. Traffic violators paid the hefty fine from October 5th to October 8th, 2019 under the amended Motor Vehicle(MV) Act 2019 implemented in the country from September 1st, 2019.
161 persons were spot fined and 369 non FIR cases were recorded during the four-day celebration. A total of 129 drunken driving cases were detected. Under the new rules, for drunken driving people will face imprisonment up to 6 months and/or pay fine up to Rs. 10000 for first offence and imprisonment up to 2 years and/or fine of Rs. 15000 for second offence.
As per reports, four accidents happened in the city amid festivities. Two sustained injuries while four succumbed to injuries.
The new MV Act aims at stricter punishment for violating traffic regulations to bring down road accidents and improve the country’s road safety record.
