Goalpara Takes The Green Way, Constructs Roads Using Plastic Waste

It is said that the roads will not be easily damaged by rain and has the potential to stand the weather parameters

Amid the green revolution and shunning of single-use plastic in the country, the Goalpara district administration has set the perfect example of how to recycle single-use plastic and use it for productivity.

Construction of several roads in remote villages of the district is underway using plastic waste and eco-friendly technologies. The initiative started last year and in a 75 km stretch of road, 45 km has already been completed using 37,260 kg of plastic waste, the Times of India reported.

The initiative is taken by Deputy Commissioner of Goalpara, Varnali Deka and supported by the Public Works Road Department(PWRD). The villagers saw a ray of hope after construction works of several under constructed roads and villages having no road communication started, using the green technology.

It is said that the roads will not be easily damaged by rain and has the potential to stand the weather parameters.

Taking cognizance of the effort, Rajiv Kumar, Vice Chairman, Niti Ayog took to his Twitter handle and wrote, “We have to maximize recycling reduce resource use in building our infrastructure. With such initiatives like the road building with plastics in #Goalpara, we will succeed.”

The roads have been built under the scheme State-Owned Priority Development(SOPD), a part of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana(PMGSY) program leaving a smile for the residents as they believe that transportation and communication will no longer be a distant dream.

“The initiative of constructing roads using plastic waste in Goalpara has been taken by DC Varnali Deka and is supported by PWR to curb environment pollution. In Assam construction of the green road has been taken in Goalpara and works have been completed in the Lakhipur area in a 1.250km stretch of road,” said Jayanta Medhi, contractor while speaking to TIME8.

Medhi further informed that under the Assam Road Maintenance Fund and SOPD several roads have been constructed in Goalpara using plastic waste and green technology like cell-fill and so on.
