In a major embarrassment to the Assam Police, a man arrested in Goalpara on theft charges escaped from the police custody on October 18th, 2019. The man identified as Rohit Sangma was reportedly arrested by the Goalpara Police on October 17th, 2019.
According to information, five prisoners including Sangma was being brought by the district police to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for medical examination. The police team had stopped near a tea shop when Sangma taking advantage of the situation fled from the spot.
A departmental probe has been ordered by the Goalpara police into the incident.
