    Additionally, the Mixer window has a few features not available in the environment, such as track notes. But there are still plenty of reasons to view the mixer in the environment instead. Read on! One of the main complaints about the Mixer window is that you can’t re-order channel strips, and there are times when this is highly desirable.

    For example, your arrangement from top to bottom has 8 tracks of drums, followed by a few tracks of synths, and then a few tracks of percussion. To make it easier to balance all of the drumming elements, it would be nice to move the percussion channels closer to the drum channels.

    But in the environment, you can rearrange your audio channels however you like. Now, the changes you make by moving the furniture around won’t be visible in the Mixer window, but in this situation you’d view the environment window instead of the Mixer. By design, layers restrict the number of objects we can see at any given time the exception being the not-terribly-useful All Objects layer.

    So when the need arises to view multiple layers at once, all you have to do is open multiple environment windows and select the appropriate layer in each one. Here’s an example of how this can be useful…. When working with multi-timbral, multi-output instruments, it’s common to create a bevy of auxes to handle the instrument’s various outputs.

    All of these objects will, as we now know, appear in the Mixer layer by default. To conveniently access all these associated channel strips, you might want to consider creating a new layer and moving just those items into it. This keeps them visually isolated from all other channel strips and other environment objects, as shown below. More articles by this author.

    Now that we have this alternative output route configured, we can get even more creative. This is a fascinating tool, allowing you to assign unique combinations of notes to each key. Use a different Chord Memorizer for each instrument path and see how you can create complicated multi-timbral chord voicings from a single note.

    The cable switcher is useful in that we can create two parallel paths, switching between them by clicking on the Cable Switcher. Create two new objects — an Arpeggiator and Monitor, both from the New menu — and wire them in series, from the second node on the Cable switcher through to the Arpeggiator, followed by the Monitor and then the Sequencer Input.     There is still one little detail you have to be aware of. If you have only one layer for your channel strips, the Mixer Layer, then any new channel strip you create by adding a new Track in the Arrange window, will be placed into that Layer.

    So technically, the Environment Layer is not really static, it dynamically updates your Environment window the Layer you have selected – with window link turned off. If you create a new layer and put some channel strips on that layer, then the whole thing changes a bit. Logic now puts the new channel strip on that layer that has the next open slot for that channel strip type.

    So Logic doesn’t choose the next highest slot but looks for the next highest unassigned slot in the sequence. I thought you might think about that before you create Environment windows and expect to always see the same channel strips, because that might not be the case. You can post now and register later.     To play the 4-voice-preset you built in Divisimate, you need to connect at least Channel Extend the Physical Input item by dragging at the edge in order to see all the inputs.

    Connect Divisimate Port 01 to the Sequencer Input by clicking the tiny triangle corresponding to Divisimate Port 01 and dragging it to the Sequencer Input. This way you can just record enable any single track and play them without Divisimate. It may also be a good idea to deactivate your MIDI keyboard here, to avoid any duplicates. Logic Pro I learned the environment from playing around in Logic while reading the environment section in the Apple manual, which for some strange reason everybody seems to disregard right away without even giving it a try!

    Too bad, because it’s the best, most exhaustive resource on the environment – and it’s available to you for free and online! Getting to Know the Environment.

    That would be wrong: they even give you an electronic template with a clever little environment built-in. In fact, after you learn the basics in the manual, you can browse our forum for all sorts of environments, from super easy to super complex.

    Start with the easy ones of course:. Well, David, we’re both experts. The number one problem with software manuals, by a very large margin, is that most have been written by people who are experts, often developers of the product.

    What is perfectly obvious to them, and doesn’t even need to be written down is often the key piece of information the noob needs to make things work. Far from disregarding the manual, I spent several hours with it.

    I need more detailed information. I don’t know what that command is, nor do I know where to find it. That’s exactly what I’m trying to do. What objects, and where are they located? Or, where is the section of the manual where this information can be found? Note that I can’t even look it up, because I haven’t been told what the name of the object is. I could do this all day, but I’m sure you get the point. When you read that material, it’s clear and obvious.

    When I read it, it’s showing me a path exists to do what I want, but I’m going to have to figure out where and how on my own. So I conceptualized an environment to do what I needed done, and along the way I developed a lot of respect for the power of the Environment. I read all the way through the section where people posted Environments they’d created. I watched some YouTube vids. I read the manual. Then I created an Environment to do what I wanted.

    It didn’t work. That’s when I got told the sentence about which you wrote “That would be wrong. So I rephrase my question. Excluding the manual, which is a starting point, where can I learn about the Environment, in depth and with clarity and speed? The first is the general stuff – key fundamental principles, the flow of messages, how to connect objects together etc.

    Logic’s manual is passable with this stuff – it’s not worded as a “Tutorial for beginners” but is I think clear enough to follow. The second is the individual objects themselves – what they do, how they what, what options they have. Logic’s manual is fine at this, as it is basically a reference manual. The third is how to build useful tools out of those objects.

    Logic’s manual won’t help you much with this stuff, in the same way the Photoshop manual can’t help you make artwork – this is really down to your requirements, playing and learning and finding and solving problems. And a fourth, if you don’t understand MIDI, you’ll really need to get to grips with that. The other thing to notice is that many of the JavaScript commands are in relatively understandable English and that some bits are in different colours.

    Try typing in event. This is how the Transpose and Delay script works. Screen 4: The code inside the squiggly brackets is a subroutine. Try playing around with the delay time and transposition values and audition the results. Also, notice the curly brackets in the code. These define routines and subroutines. Screen 5: Adding some code to an existing script. To show how these work, open up two instances of Scripter and load the Transpose and Delay Script in one and the Trace Events Script in another.

    Copy the event. Now when you input MIDI data you should see the input notes displayed along with hearing the delay and transpose processing.
