The recent incident of the alleged Sanatan Deka murder in Hajo has received widespread condemnation from concerned citizens across the country.
Sanatan Deka, a vegetable vendor who allegedly murdered in by a group of five men in Monahkuchi village in Assam’s Kamrup district on May 24 last. He is survived by his aged parents, wife and a child.
The fateful incident has not only taken away a life but also ruined a family as he was the only bread earner. Deka’s family hardly overcame the trauma of the incident, when life posed yet another challenge ahead of them.
His family now stares at darker days ahead with their meagre finances running out as Deka was the sole bread-winner of the family.
At this juncture, an Assam-based NGO has come forward to help rehabilitate the family of Sanatan Deka and lead a respectful life ahead.
The NGO – Shri Shri Sankardev Sewa Samiti has initiated an online fundraising campaign in this regard.
Founder and managing trustee of the Samiti, Gayatri Borpatra Gohain said, “We came to know about the incident much before it ran in the news. Immediately, we tried to establish contact with the victim’s family. We also spoke to the Gaonburah and took stock of the family’s condition. After talking to a few more people we learnt about the penurious condition of the family, and this was when we decided to do something for Deka’s family.”
Notably, the Samiti has partnered with Crowdkash – a platform for fundraising and has set a target of collecting Rs. 30 Lakh for the campaign. The fund so collected would be transferred to the victim’s family.
“After much deliberation with the members of the Samiti, it was decided that a fundraising campaign would be initiated across social media platforms to provide financial support to the family. A bank account has been created in the name of the wife of Sanatan Deka so that the fund reaches directly to the family,” she added.
Till Thursday, Rs. 2,92,000 out of the total target has already been raised through the campaign.
“More than 80% of the funds raised till now have come from outside Assam. A sizeable portion of it has also come from abroad. We are hopeful that the targeted amount shall be raised and the amount is used to bring the family’s condition to the former state.”
It is to be mentioned that in its eight years of journey, Shri Shri Sankardev Sewa Samiti has rendered commendable service to the society with its wide network of volunteers across the country and abroad.
