Former Assam CM Bats For Formation Of New Political Party To Oust BJP

The Union Home Ministry has issued a notification stating that the provisions of the Citizenship Amendment Act will come into force from January 10th, 2020

Former Assam Chief Minister and veteran Congress leader Tarun Gogoi said that a political party has become a necessity now to oust Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) out of power in Assam.

In a series of tweets, Gogoi said that “greedy for power” Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has back-stabbed the people of Assam.

“A political party has become a necessity now to oust BJP. We are not selfishly looking after our own interests because a new political party might inflict some damage on our party as well. We are trying to protect the interests of the people of Assam,” Gogoi wrote on microblogging site.

He added, “People trusted Sonowal but he has become a puppet to Delhi, in his greed for power, he has backstabbed the people. The downfall of this Govt has started. If he wants to survive, he must take steps to withdraw CAA & protect the indigenous people of Assam.”

It may be mentioned that the Union Home Ministry has issued a notification stating that the provisions of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will come into force from January 10th, 2020. However, the Centre is yet to frame rules for the Act. Congress is vehemently opposing the CAA, and the BJP pressing for its implementation.

The call for a new political party to oust BJP out has been gaining momentum in Assam ever since the All Assam Students’ Union made such a proposition recently.

“The BJP has brought the entire country on the streets and leaving the people in misery. Instead of addressing people’s demand, the Govt is engaged in show-of-strength by organising peace rallies which are only an admission that because of their ruling, peace in the state is hit.1657,” he added.

Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took a dig at Gogoi’s tweet and wrote he understands the later’s “agony”.

It may be mentioned, the Assam Congress will move a resolution in the Assembly on January 13th, 2020 to keep the state out of the CAA’s purview. T

Congress leader Debabrata Saikia on January 11th, 2020 also asked Sonowal to quit the BJP and form a new government with his party’s support.
