Tapan Kumar Deka – the 1988 IPS officer of Himachal Pradesh Cadre – is likely to be appointed as the next Director General of Police (DGP), Assam, as per several media reports. Incumbent DGP Kuladhar Saikia will attain his superannuation on August 31st, 2019.
Deka is presently serving as the Joint Director, Intelligence Bureau (Northeast). He was an active member of the All Assam Students’ Union and also participated in the Assam Agitation movement. He hails from Tezpur. Deka is also the recipient of President’s Police Medal.
It may be mentioned that as per the order of the Supreme Court, for the first time, the DGP will be appointed by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) rather than an internal state committee. Earlier this year, the apex court had directed all the states to send names of senior police officers to the UPSC for being considered as probable candidates to be appointed as DGPs or Police Commissioners.
The Commission will prepare a list of three most suitable officers and the state will be free to appoint one of them as the police chief. Assam Police sources informed that the meeting regarding the appointment of the next DGP is scheduled to take place on August 27th, 2019.
