A 70 feet effigy of Ravana will be set to flames in Assam’s North Guwahati as a part of Dussehra celebrations on October 8th, 2019. The event is organized by Barowari Durga Puja Samiti at Madhyam Khanda, North Guwahati.
Vijaya Dashami or Dussehra is a major Hindu festival celebrated at the end of Navratri every year. It is observed on the tenth day in the Hindu calendar month of Ashvin or Kartik. Vijaya Dashami marks the end of Durga Puja, remembering goddess Durga’s victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura.
A bulk of crackers worth several lakh have been brought from Barpeta for the celebration. A young artisan, Ramen Baruah has designed the Ravana and the estimated cost was Rs 1 lakh.
“It took me a month to complete the whole structure. I have used thermocol, bamboo sheets, bamboo, paper, glue etc to make it,” said Ramen while talking to Time8.
