The Assam Police on September 4th, 2019 arrested the prime accused in the dastardly Teok Tea Estate mob lynching incident which claimed a doctor’s life. A total of 31 persons have been arrested in connection with the incident so far.
The arrestee identified as Sanjay Rajuwar had reportedly used a sickle to attack the on-duty doctor and further instigated the mob to launch the scathing attack. The 73-year-old Dr Deben Dutta succumbed to his injuries before reaching the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital on the fateful day.
On the night of August 31st, 2019, Dr Dutta was mercilessly beaten by the relatives of a tea garden worker for allegedly reaching the hospital premises late. He was working in the tea garden hospital after his retirement without remuneration.
Post the incident, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) reiterated its zero-tolerance against any sort of violence on doctors, health workers and health establishments came down heavily against the government and demanded that there should be strict policy to prevent violence on doctors. On September 4th, 2019, a central team of the IMA visited late Dr Dutta’s residence and spoke with his family members.
