All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) general secretary, Lurin Jyoti Gogoi, on September 12th, 2019 accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of hatching a conspiracy against the students’ body. The reaction came a day after the Assam BJP’s minority cell chief Mominul Awal’s said that the students’ body is a ‘fallen army’ and has kneeled down before the ‘infiltrated Muslims’.
Speaking to the media persons, Gogoi said, “Mominul Awal has no right to speak about the AASU. The BJP should not try to become AASU’s guardian.” He further alleged that Awal had worked in connivance with the All Assam Minorities Student’s Union while he was in AASU. “The AASU is working for the interest of the greater Assamese community,” he added.
Dissatisfied with the final National Register of Citizens list, which was released on August 31st, 2019, Gogoi said the body would move the Supreme Court in the matter soon. “We have already consulted with the advocate in the matter,” he added.
Moreover, slamming the Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for his ‘stoic silence’ on Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, Gogoi said, “The Chief Minister has betrayed the Assamese community by keeping mum on the Bill.” He further asked Sonowal and the Asom Gana Parishad, the ally of the BJP, to “learn lessons” from the Chief Minister of
