The domes of the newly-constructed Kartarpur Gurudwara in Pakistan collapsed in a thunderstorm which hit both India and Pakistan on April 17th, 2020.

According to several media reports, as many as eight newly-constructed domes outside the perimeter of the Gurudwara were damaged due to the thunderstorm.

Four of the damaged domes were on minarets, two on museums, one on Dewanistan and one on Darshan Deori Luckily. However, there was no damage to the sanctum sanctorum of the Gurudwara Kartarpur Sahib.

Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur, also called Kartarpur Sahib, is a gurdwara in Kartarpur, located in Shakargarh, Narowal District, in the Punjab province of Pakistan.

The Kartarpur Corridor is a visa-free border crossing and secure corridor, connecting the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib also called Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan to the Indian border in Punjab.

Located on the banks of the Ravi river, the gurdwara is also notable for its location near the border between Pakistan and India. The shrine is visible from the Indian side of the border.

This historic moment officially allowed Indian Sikh pilgrims rare visa-free access to the site in Pakistan. It is also claimed to be the largest gurdwara in the world.

It may be mentioned, the Government of India suspended travel and registration for the pilgrimage on March 16th, 2020 to contain the spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

“In wake of the #COVID19india outbreak, as a precautionary measure to contain and control the spread of the disease, the travel and registration for #SriKartarpurSahib is temporarily suspended from 12 am March 16, 2020, till further orders,” the Union Home Ministry said in a tweet.
