Dhing’s Member of the Legislative Assembly from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Aminul Islam was arrested by the Nagaon Police on Wednesday for allegedly making communal and provocative statements through social media.
Aminul Islam was arrested under a Nagaon Police Station case (no-877/2020) under the sections 120B/153A/124A/295A of the Indian Penal Code.
SP Nagaon, Gaurav Abhijit Dilip said that the MLA was arrested based on certain complaints that he had been circulating clips and messages on social media that were highly communal and provocative which had the tendencies to create a clash between two particular communities amidst the ongoing lockdown and outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
He added that based on the allegations a case was registered at the Nagaon Police Station and he was arrested in the wee hours of Tuesday.
The SP added that the MLA during the interrogation accepted that the clip with communal speech which was being circulated on social media was made by him and he had forwarded it to several people. The police have also seized the mobile phone of the MLA and an investigation on the people who have received the clip or have forwarded it will also be initiated.
The SP said actions might also be taken against the people who did not report to the police after receiving the clip or on the people who have further forwarded it.
According to the SP, the clip is an “extremely” communal speech and it also questions the government of India. Along with this, the clip also states several false information related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly has also been informed about the entire case.
Time8 could not independently verify the clips or posts based on which the MLA was arrested.
