    ‘Cut Off Assam’ Remark: Sharjeel Imam To Be Brought To Guwahati On Feb 20

    The Guwahati police will ask for 14 days custody to the court for interrogation

    The alleged mastermind of Shaheen Bagh protest and Jawaharlal Nehru University(JNU) student Sharjeel Imam will be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate(CJM) Court Kamrup(M) on January 20th, 2020, the police informed today.

    Imam will be brought to the city via Brahmaputra mail and he is expected to arrive in Guwahati at around 2:45 pm. The Guwahati police will ask for 14 days custody under pre-trial detention to the court for interrogation in a sedition case registered against him for the suspect’s instigating remarks.

    “Sherjeel Imam will be produced before the CJM court tomorrow. Will all due formalities we will ask the court for 14 days custody. He is currently in Tihar jail,” said Guwahati Commissioner of Police, Munna Prasad Gupta.

    The CP also informed that an Assam police team was in Delhi to co-ordinate in the case and he will be brought to the state with the help of Delhi police.

    It may be mentioned that police of six states Bihar, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi booked Imam under the relevant sections of the IPC for his alleged statement that Assam, Northeast should be cut off from the rest of India. He is also facing the charge of sedition.

    On February 18th, 2020 the Delhi Police said they filed a charge sheet in connection with the December 15 violence at Jamia Millia Islamia University. Imam has been named as an “instigator”.
