Coronavirus May Never Go Away: WHO

The virus first emerged in Wuhan in China's central Hubei province late last year in December and has since infected more than 4.3 million people and killed nearly 300,000 worldwide

The new coronavirus “may never go away”, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned as the number of cases and fatalities continue to surge across the globe.

The WHO added that populations around the world will have to learn to live with it as some countries begin gradually easing lockdown restrictions imposed in a bid to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The virus first emerged in Wuhan in China’s central Hubei province late last year in December and has since infected more than 4.3 million people and killed nearly 300,000 worldwide.

“This virus may become just another endemic virus in our communities, and this virus may never go away. HIV has not gone away but we have come to terms with the virus,” Dr Ryan, the WHO’s emergencies director, told the virtual press conference from Geneva.

Dr Ryan added that even if a vaccine is found, controlling the highly contagious virus will require a “massive effort”.
