Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on August 18th, 2019 convened a high-level meeting with Assam Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) leaders to discuss on the matters related to the forthcoming by-elections for the four Assam Assembly seats which have been lying vacant since the declaration of the Lok Sabha election results in May 23rd this year.
It may be mentioned that seats of the four constituencies—Ratabari, Sonari, Rangapara and Jania have been lying vacant after their respective MLAs were elected as the Members of the Parliament(MP).
Keeping in view of the vacancy, the state BJP had constituted four sub-committees with convenors for the upcoming by-elections. The members of the sub-committees include Assam Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, Dibrugarh MP Rameshwar Telli, Jorhat MP Topon Kumar Gogoi, Tezpur MP Pallab Lochan Das and host of other MLAs.
Earlier, the Assam BJP President Ranjit Dass had stated that the BJP is confident of the three vacant seats—Ratabari, Sonari, Rangapara as they have their stronghold and talks were also on for the Jania seat.
From Ratabari-Kripanath Mallah had won the Kamrimganj MP seat, from Sonari-Topon Kumar Gogoi had won the Jorhat seat and Pallab Lochan Das from Rangapara had won the Tezpur seat. On the other hand, Congress leader Abdul Khaleque from Jania won the Barpeta seat.
