CM Sonowal Cancels Majuli Visit ‘Fearing’ Anti-CAA Protests

The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) and the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on January 7th, 2020, said that the Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal cancelled his visit to Majuli, the river island district, “fearing” the anti-Citizenship Act protests.

Speaking to the media persons, Bitupan Sarma, general secretary of the Majuli wing of the AASU, said, “We have observed black day against the ruling BJP. We also burnt effigies of the CM as part of the protest at Garmur. CM Sonowal cancelled his visit fearing anti-CAA protests.”

He further said that the people of the state will not accept the contentious act. “We will continue agitating against the act,” he added.

Protestors burnt effigies of the CM and wave black flags. They chanted slogans against Sonowal, BJP government and the act. The protestors demanded immediate scrapping of the act for the interest of the Assamese community.
