Clamour for release of KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi grows louder after Guwahati jail declared Containment zone

Akhil Gogoi was first arrested on December 12 from Jorhat

Guwahati: The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti on Saturday reiterated the demand of releasing its leaders Akhil Gogoi, Dhajya Konwar, Bitu Sonowal and other anti-CAA protesters unconditionally after an inmate of the Guwahati central jail was tested Covid-19 positive.

The Kamrup Metro district administration on Friday sealed the jail complex with immediate to contain further spreading of the virus and declared the entire jail premises as “containment zone”.

KMSS joint general secretary Mukut Deka said, ‘All the inmates of Guwahati central jail are now quite prone to infection. Maintaining social distance and public hygiene has been a question of doubt inside the premises of the Guwahati central jail due to lack of space.’

Deka argued, ‘If Akhil Gogoi and other KMSS leaders are not released, particularly after testing an inmate corona virus-positive, we will understand that government is conspiring to let the KMSS leaders get infected with the virus.’ Deka also urged the government to release the other jail inmates on parole leave to ensure containing the virus.

Already, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), investigating Akhil’s case, in its charge-sheet against the anti-CAA protesters – Akhil Gogoi, Dhaijya Konwar and Bittu Sonowal had highlighted the usage of terms such as “comrade” and “lal salam”.

Akhil Gogoi was arrested on December 12 last year from Jorhat and charged under Sections 120B, 253A, 153B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections 18 and 39 of UAPA. The two other KMSS leaders were arrested later amidst the growing protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The NIA in its charge sheet held the use of phrases like ‘lal salam’ and ‘comrade’ are evidence that Bittu Sonowal, a close aide of Assam farmers’ leader Akhil Gogoi, is a Maoist.

Sonowal was arrested by the NIA in January 2020 and was charged under the UAPA too. Since January, he has been in judicial custody and accordingly on May 29, the NIA filed the charge-sheet. The charge-sheet reportedly stated that Sonowal had also uploaded a post with Lenin’s picture on his Facebook profile.
