The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP)’s Khumtai legislator Mrinal Saikia seems to be embroiled in a major controversy after his remark against the organisations protesting against the Citizenship Act as more people including political parties have demanded action against the leader.
On December 26th, 2019, Saikia addressing a meeting said that the leaders of the organisations protesting against the newly enacted act have earned lakhs of rupees in the name of protests. The MLA said that the BJP workers have tolerated enough and now it’s time to act as they have the support of the people. “If someone burns your house, burn down their houses. If someone touches one of ours, target 10 of theirs,” he told a gathering in Chabua in Dibrugarh district.
Condemning the incident, the Chabua wing of the All Assam Students’ Union demanded immediate arrest of the legislator. The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad demanded appropriate action against the MLA.
The Brihattar Asomiya Yuva Mancha, Sivasagar, also lodged an FIR with the Sivasagar Sadar Police against the MLA in the matter.
On December 28th, 2019, the villagers of Dhekial Adhlikuch under Khumtai constituency ‘barred’ the entry of BJP MLA in his own constituency in protest against his recent statements.
The opposition Congress said that the Assam government should take action against Saikia as it had earlier warned of punishment for any person inflicting violence.
A civil society group has also filed an FIR at Nagaon against the MLA for allegedly asking his partymen to retaliate against any attack on them by the anti-CAA protesters.
Meanwhile, Assam cabinet minister Chandra Mohan Patowary has said that action will be taken against anyone who attempts to deteriorate the law and order situation of the state. “I do not know what he said but action will be initiated against anyone who attempts to deteriorate the law and order situation of Assam” he said.
