Assam will go for by-polls on October 21st, 2019 for its four Assembly constituencies and the fate of a total of 20 candidates will be decided on October 24th, 2019.
The by-polls of these four seats – Rangapara, Sonari, Ratabari and Jania – were scheduled after sitting Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs and ministers Pallab Lochan Das (Rangapara), Tapan Gogoi (Sonari), Deputy Speaker Kripanath Mallah (Ratabari) and Congress’ Abdul Khaleque (Jania) were elected as MPs in Lok Sabha.
Campaigning for the by-polls ended on October 19th, 2019 and as they are gearing up for the elections, let’s HAVE look at the candidates who are in the fray for the four Assembly seats.
Rangapara: Five candidates are in the fray for this constituency and they are, Kartik Kurmi (Congress), Arup Kumar Chowdhury and Rajen Borthakur (BJP), Royal Soreng (CPI-M) and Sanjit Rajbongshi (SUCI – Communist).
Sonari: Two are in the fray and they are, Nabanita Handique (BJP) and Sushil Kumar Suri (Congress).
Ratabari: Four candidates are contesting for this constituency. Bijoy Malakar (BJP), Keshab Prasad Rajak (Congress), Birendra Ravidas (SUCI – Communist) and Parikhit Roy (Independent).
Jania: This constituency has the highest number of candidates contesting and the major fight will be between Towfiqur Rahman (BJP), Samsul Haque (Congress) and Rafiqul Islam (AIUDF).
The other candidates are Faruk Khan (AAP), Rafikul Islam (Democratic Party of India), Chand Mahmud (NPP), Rustom Ali (CPI-M), Abdul Jalil Talukdar and Subhash Sutradhar are independent candidates.
