The much-awaited Chandubi Festival 2020 has been cancelled as a mark of respect to the ongoing protests launched by several organisations of Assam in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA).
Addressing the media persons, Jiban Rabha, president of the Chandubi Celebration Committee said, “It is the need of the hour to show solidarity with the people of Assam who have been protesting against the new citizenship act. Hence, it was collectively decided to cancel the festival this year.”
The Chandubi Festival was scheduled to be held from January 1st to 5th, 2020. The Chandubi lake is about 70 km from Guwahati and is biodiversity hot spot.
Ever since it started, the five-day revelry witnesses a large footfall of people partaking in the festivities. Ethnic food items and colourful dances draw a big crowd every year.
The freshwater lake was created when earthquake struck in 1897. During that period the forest went down and became the lake.
The lake’s chief feature is the natural lagoon that has been formed in the lake. The lake offers fishing, and the administrators of the lake have provided facilities to go rowing in the lake waters.
