Guwahati: After a photograph of a Royal Bengal tiger lying on a bed near Kaziranga National Park (KNP) went viral, another photograph of a big cat taking a night stroll has now surfaced on the social media platforms.
According to the eyewitnesses, the tiger was seen walking stealthily past the busy Burapahar road along the National Highway-37 on the night of July 26th, 2019. The traffic came to a standstill along the Highway for some time with commuters waiting patiently for the wild to cross the road.
Last week, a big cat escaped from the flooded Kaziranga and took shelter at the house near National Highway-37 sending shock waves across the region. The officials of the Assam Forest Department, Wildlife Trust of India along with the locals had to wait until dark to give the tiger a safe passage from the house to the forest.
With the water level receding at the World Heritage Site, animals taking shelter in the nearby Karbi Hills have started returning to the grasslands.
The death toll of animals in KNP and Tiger Reserve increased to 215, as on July 26th, 2019. Presently, around 30 per cent area of the world-renowned park is submerged.
Around 182 animals died of drowning, 17 were hit by vehicles and 11 others died due to other various reasons in the KNP. On the other hand, about 69 animals have been rescued by the Forest department, Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) team and the locals. 59 of the rescued animals have been released after treatment and five are currently under treatment of the CWRC.
