Veteran Congress leader Kapil Sibal on December 9th, 2019 came down heavily on the government over the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, saying it is a “cab” ride with a divisive driver.
The Bill or CAB seeks to grant Indian citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan escaping religious persecution there.
“CAB is a cab ride with a divisive driver to: destabilise, destroy our polity values both societal and constitutional with an eye only on political dividends. Hath milao Desh bachao!” Sibal said in a tweet.
Sibal called upon the people of nation and leaders across party lines to join hands against the “divisive driver”.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah will table the Bill at 12 pm in the Lok Sabha on December 9th, 2019, later in the day it will be taken up for discussion and passage, according to the Lok Sabha’s List of Business.
The Bill has triggered massive protests in Assam with agitators claiming that the Bill goes against the spirit of secularism and nullifies the historic 1985 Assam Accord.
