Three women including a minor were rescued from an alleged human trafficking ring in Guwahati on February 7th, 2020.
The three of them hail from different parts of the state– Bokajan, Sivasagar, Barpeta districts. According to the victims they were allegedly sold at Rs 1 lakh to human traffickers operating in the state and they somehow managed to escape from the racket through the help of youth.
Narrating their ordeal one said that she was kidnapped while she was on her way to school in Bokajan while another was sold by her lover while they were on a trip to Dimapur from Sivasagar and the other who worked as a house help fell victim to abuse.
The three of them are currently at the shelter of Global Organisation for Life Development(GOLD), an NGO that works for the prevention of human trafficking and protection of street children.
It may be mentioned that Assam is considered as one of the most vulnerable regions for human trafficking seeing a steep rise in the number of missing adolescent child across the state.
Anti Human Trafficking Units (AHTU) have also been created and operationalized in all district of Assam to effectively combat crimes related to trafficking of persons.
