A new regional party has been launched in Nagaon district of Assam in wake of protests against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
The party – Asom Gana Manch – will also contest the Assam Assembly elections slated to be held next year.
“We will field candidates in 126 constituencies in the Assembly elections. The aim of the party is to protect the land, language and culture of Assam,” said Himanta Kumar Dutta, secretary of the party.
It may be mentioned, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) which is spearheading the protest against CAA said that after February this year, the process of formation of a new political party will be intensified.
In the wake of anti CAA protest, there were suggestions from different quarters urging the AASU to explore the possibility of an alternative political force to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and Asom Gana Parishad and to opposition Congress as well. Assam is going to assembly polls in 2021.
