In a fresh blow to the Congress, MP Sanjay Singh on July 30th, 2019 resigned from the Rajya Sabha as well as the party. He will join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on July 31st, 2019, as per latest information.
Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu has accepted the resignation of Singh. He is an MP from Assam and was elected to the Upper House on April 2014. His tenure was slated to expire in 2020. He said he is leaving Congress due to “zero leadership” in the party.
Singh was twice elected to the Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh during the 1980s and held state ministerial posts. In 1990, he became a member of the Upper House, and in 1998 he was elected to the Lok Sabha.
In 2009, he was successful in obtaining a second term as a member of the 15th Lok Sabha representing the Sultanpur constituency of Uttar Pradesh.
