    Breaking: Committee On Clause 6 Of Assam Accord To Meet Today In Guwahati

    Guwahati: The committee set up by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to recommend measures for the implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord will hold the second meeting here on August 2nd, 2019.

    The meeting will take place at the Assam Administrative Staff College at Resham Nagar, Khanapara from 2:30 pm onwards. The first meeting of the committee was held in New Delhi on July 24th, 2019 with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

    On July 16th, 2019, the Union Home Ministry constituted a 13-member high-level committee to implement Clause 6 of the 1985 Assam Accord. The committee is headed by Justice (Retd) Biplab Kumar Sarma, a former judge of Gauhati High Court.

    The other panel members include Ramesh Borpatragohain, Advocate General, Assam; Niloy Dutta, Advocate General, Arunachal Pradesh; Subhash Das, IAS (retd); Pallav Bhattacharya, IPS (retd); Dr Srishtidhar Dutta, retired professor; Sumanta Chaliha, author and columnist; Dr Jaikanta Sharma, professor and columnist; Wasbir Hussain, senior journalist; Samujjal Bhattacharya, chief adviser, All Assam Students Union (AASU); Dipanka Nath, president, AASU; Lurinjyoti Gogoi, general secretary, AASU and academician Mrinal Miri.

    The Assam Accord was a Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) signed between representatives of the Government of India and the leaders of the Assam Movement in New Delhi on August 15th, 1985. A six-year agitation demanding identification and deportation of illegal immigrants was launched by the AASU in 1979. It culminated with the signing of the Assam Accord.
