The Assam Cabinet on February 12th, 2020, approved the Transgender Policy. A Transgender Welfare Board will be established under this policy which will work for reservation in education and employment and also in the health sector.
Speaking to Time8, Assam’s first transgender judge Swati Bidhan Baruah said, “Assam government’s approval to the transgender policy is the result of my ten years of struggle.” Swati further said that this will now abolish the discrimination in society and will create awareness.
Besides, Swati said that over the years the community faced many hurdles and difficulties to live a life in the society. “Government’s nod to the policy has given a relief to the community to live a better life now,” Swati said.
