In a shocking development, Ajit Pawar has resigned as Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra ahead of a floor test ordered by the Supreme Court on November 27th, 2019. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who will address the media at 3.30 pm, may also resign, as per media reports. Official confirmation is still awaited.
The Supreme Court on November 26th, 2019 asked the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Devendra Fadnavis government in Maharashtra to prove its majority on the floor of the assembly by November 27th, 2019 within 5 pm.
Fadnavis took oath as the Maharashtra Chief Minister for a second term on November 23rd, 2019 more than a week after the state was placed under President’s Rule. On the other hand, NCP chief Sharad Pawar’s nephew, Ajit, took oath as his deputy.
The controversial oath ceremony was challenged in the Supreme Court by Ajit’s party NCP, Shiv Sena and Congress.
