The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has pulled up their socks to pocket the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) in the council’s general election to be held in 2020. “The BJP is confident of pocketing the BTC in the council’s election to be held next year,” the Assam BJP spokesperson Jayanta Das said on August 25th, 2019 in Assam’s Baksa district.
Addressing a press conference in Baksa’s Tamulpur, Das said, “The BJP is confident of winning sufficient seats to pocket the council. The BJP has formed the government at the Centre for the second time. On the other hand, the party is ruling the state very smoothly. This indicates that our party will also be able to form the council.”
Talking about the membership drive, he said, “A total of 52,000 members joined the BJP in Baksa district so far. The party is strong enough to fight the election in 2020.” He further informed that the membership drive will be continued to September 7th, 2019.
It may be mentioned that Independent MP Naba Kumar Sarania, who is representing the Kokrajhar constituency since 2014, announced on August 21st, 2019 to float a new political party by October this year. He also exhibited confidence that his party will win 35 seats out of the 40 seats in the 2020 general election of the BTC.
The former ULFA commander also stated that the party will be modelled on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in a bid to safeguard the interests of the non-Bodos.
