    BJP Burns Prateek Hajela’s Effigy Over Sabitri Roy Death Case In Hailakandi

    Sabitri Roy allegedly committed suicide over the exclusion of her name from the final NRC list

    The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers in Hailakandi staged a protest against the state coordinator for National Register of Citizens (NRC) Prateek Hajela and burnt his effigy in front of the deputy commissioner’s office on September 5th, 2019. The protestors held Hajela responsible for the death of Sabitri Roy, who had committed suicide allegedly by setting herself ablaze at Station Road area on September 4th, 2019 over exclusion of her name from the final NRC list. The police arrested the Town President of the BJP Manab Chakravarty.

    It may be mentioned that Roy allegedly attempted to commit suicide by setting herself ablaze over the exclusion of her name in the final NRC in the district in Assam’s Barak Valley yesterday. The list was published on August 31st, 2019. As per information, she had set herself ablaze in the bathroom of her residence. She was rushed to the SK Rai Civil Hospital. Later, she was referred to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition where she succumbed to her injuries.

    The final NRC list was released after a six-year-long process. The NRC updation was started in 2013 after the Supreme Court of India had promulgated an order. The apex court has been monitoring the whole updation procedure since then. A total of 3,11,21,004 persons were found eligible for inclusion in the list while a total of 19,06,657 persons were found ineligible including who did not submit claims.
