Big Breaking: Union Cabinet Clears Citizenship Bill

The Union Cabinet cleared the bill at the meeting presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Amid massive opposition in Assam and other Northeastern states, the Union Cabinet on December 4th, 2019 cleared the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill at the meeting presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Union Cabinet approved the Bill as it had incorporated changes following concerns from the Northeastern states. The Bill is likely to be tabled at the Parliament this week.

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had earlier asked the party MPs to be present in large numbers when Shah tables the Bill in Parliament. Singh equated the significance of the Bill with the move to nullify Article 370 provisions.

The Bill seeks to grant Indian citizenship to non-Muslims who fled religious persecution from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan and entered India before December 31, 2014.
