Guwahati: The Supreme Court on July 23rd, 2019 extended the deadline for publication of the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) from July 31st, 2019 to now August 31st, 2019.
The top court also declined the prayer by Centre and Assam for conducting reverification of names to check wrongful inclusions or exclusions, especially in bordering districts of Assam.
The Centre and the Assam government on July 19th, 2019 urged the Supreme Court to extend the deadline for publishing the final NRC by a month as “lakhs of people could have been wrongly included” in the citizens’ charter.
On the midnight of December 31st, 2017, partial draft of the NRC was released and subsequently on July 30th, 2018, the complete draft NRC was released. A total of 28,983,677 persons were found eligible out of 32,991,384 applicants in the final draft of the NRC.
The NRC authorities on June 26th, 2019 published an additional draft exclusion list consisting of 1,02,462 persons.
