Guwahati Police Resort To Blank Firing As Anti-CAB Protests Intensify

Guwahati Police had to resort to blank firing on December 11th, 2019 as protests against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 intensified in the city.

On December 11th, 2019, scores of students took to the streets to protest against the Bill. The students broke police barricade and marched towards the Janata Bhawan. The agitators chanted anti-BJP, anti-CAB slogans and demanded the government to scrap the Bill.

Panic and fear gripped the traders along the GS Road in Guwahati as agitators took out rallies opposing the Bill. In the morning hours, the AASU activists blocked the GS Road at Khanapara point to oppose the Bill.

To stop the protestors to march towards the Janata Bhawan, the police had to resort to blank firing at Dispur, just after crossing the Ganeshguri flyover.

The students of city colleges like Handique College, Cotton University, activities of students’ bodies and civil organisation hit the streets to protest against the Bill. The protesting students broke the barricade at ABC point and clashed with the police.

After the back-to-back bandhs called by the local organisations and students’ bodies over the Bill, Assam continues to be restive.

Normal life across Assam came to a standstill on December 10th, 2019 in view of an 11-hour bandh called by North East Students Organisation and the influential All Assam Students Union against the Bill.
