Guwahati: A local fast track court in Guwahati on August 1st, 2019 postponed the verdict on quantum of punishment in the sensational murder case of a meritorious city college student, Shweta Agarwal. The quantum of punishment will be delivered on August 3rd, 2019.
On July 30th, 2019, a local court here convicted Govind Singhal, who was Shweta’s boyfriend, his mother Kamla Devi Singhal and sister Bhawani Singhal under Sections 302 and 201 of the IPC.

Shweta was the state topper in her 12th grade in the commerce stream in 2015. At the time of the murder, she was a student of 5th semester B Com student in KC Das Commerce College here. Her murder had triggered a huge public outcry across the state.
Shweta’s charred body was found in the bathroom of the rented house of the Singhals. On that fateful day, she visited Govind at his rented accommodation at Shantipur locality in Bharalumukh area of the city. They picked up a quarrel on the issue of their relationship. Shweta wanted Govind to marry her but he “avoided the topic”.

They pushed and shoved each other around and at one time, Govind pushed her too hard against a wall. “She screamed and fell down unconscious. Her jaw was locked,” Hiren Nath, the then Guwahati Commissioner of Police told Time8.
A panicked Govind had made an attempt to dump the body in the Bharalu river but soon shelved the plan and returned home with the body. Later, he dragged the body to the bathroom, poured kerosene on it and set it on fire.
