Bengali Hindus Marrying Into Assamese Families Likely To Get Rs 40,000 Incentive

The scheme has been proposed in order to strengthen the bond between the two communities

If you are a Bengali Hindu bride or groom and planning to marry into an Assamese Hindu family, here’s good news for you.

The Bengali Hindu brides and grooms in the state planning to marry into an Assamese family could receive Rs 40,000 each as financial assistance under a scheme proposed by the Assam Linguistic Minority Development Board, the TOI reported. The proposal has been submitted to the Assam government.

The scheme has been proposed in order to strengthen the bond between the two communities. The Board has also designed a website for the Bengali-Assamese Hindu couple to register their details online.

Alok Kumar Ghose, chairman, Assam Linguistic Minority Development Board told TOI that as couples in inter-community marriages often face a social boycott and are deprived of property rights, the financial aid would help them to invest in business avenues and secure their future.

It may be noted, the Assam government will start Arundhati gold scheme from the new financial year for the registered newly married couples. Under the new scheme, an amount of Rs 30,000 will be given to the bride to purchase gold.

Assam Finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that the scheme is aimed to promote marriage registrations and prevent under-age marriages in the state.

He said that the annual income of the bride and her father should not be more than Rs 5 lakh per year to avail the benefit under the Arundhati gold scheme.
