The ban on the internet was imposed on December 11th, 2019 in 10 districts in the wake of violent protests against the newly-enacted citizenship law.

On December 12th, 2019, the suspension on internet services was extended by 48 hours across the state and on December 14th and 15th, 2019 by 24 hours.

The Gauhati High Court on December 17th, 2019 had directed the state government to review the law and order situation and consider restoring the mobile internet service in Assam.

Four petitions were filed at the High Court seeking its intervention in restoring mobile internet connectivity in the state.

Suspension of internet services in Assam has affected the commercial activities based on mobile-internet. Cab services, food delivery services, e-commerce services and banking have been hugely affected following the net suspension.
